Ending July: Through Forest and Prairie

I ended July with a 2.19 mile trail run on the 27th and a 2.12 mile hike through prairie habitat on the 31st. July was mostly hot and very humid, but I ended the month with a total of 24.95 miles. As I did with June, I added up my miles for the month and donated $2.25 per mile hiked in July. Rounding up, I added $60 to my commitment of raising $1,500 for cancer research! I'm halfway there!

July 27 - 2.19 Miles

This was only my second trail run in quite some time so it was slow but felt pretty good! I didn't stop to make many pictures but I did see several Red-spotted Purple admiral butterflies and some more Ghost Pipes. I've seen more Ghost Pipes this year than I ever have combined. Growing conditions must be just right for them!

July 31 - 2.12 Miles

On my way home from work, a storm had just passed which caused a significant temperature drop! I had to take advantage of the lower temp and breeze to make a quick loop around one of my favorite parks that mostly lacks shade. The native prairie flowers blooming were pretty near peak and all the colors were beautiful. Below I’ll include a list of many of the wildflowers I was able to identify during my hike at Gleason Family Nature Preserve.

Some of the native flowers I saw: Common Jewelweed, Swamp Milkweed, Prairie Dock, Tall Ironweed, Wild Bergamot, Purple Coneflower, Gray-headed Coneflower, Rattlesnake Master, Wingstem, Spotted Joe-pye Weed, White Wild Indigo, Common Milkweed, Tall Coreopsis, Hollow Joe-pye Weed, and Ashy Sunflower.

Towards the end of my hike, it looked like more storms might come through! I often get to see big dramatic skies at Gleason!

So much Rattlesnake Master in this section!
